Love Like Jesus: John 13:18-35
The professor of the current cohort I am a part of at SWBTS asked us to write one final sermon manuscript as part of our first year’s work.  He told us we could pick any part of John’s Gospel.  I have just finished writing the following sermon on John 13:18-35. — LOVE LIKE JESUS: A SERMON ON JOHN 13:18-35 Good morning!  I am so glad that you have joined us for church today! ...

Obedience Brings Blessing
This morning, I was reading Psalm 81 written by Asaph, a choir director.  In this psalm he refers to Israel’s history and its disobedience.  In verse 8, the Lord says, “O Israel, if you would listen to Me!”  God speaks to us and He speaks to us through His Word.  The big question is this, though: Are we listening?  Israel is an example to us.  They had the cloud by day and the fire by night. ...

The Church As Community
In the 9 am service Sunday morning @OvercomingFaith, I shared on why the church as a community is so important before my 9 am message. Reading Bonhoeffer’s writings on the church has influenced my thinking on this.  Part of the church being church is the community of believers and the church is literally the Body of Christ.  This is why coming to church is so important, why being involved...

The Right Habits for 2012
Yesterday, in his sermon, my father, Dr. Gene Lingerfelt referenced a positive motivational statement he saw for the first time in the movie Million Dollar Baby.  In one of the gym scenes, this quote is featured on the wall, “Winners are simply willing to do what losers won’t”. Sunday evening, a man in the church e-mailed my father to let him know the history of the saying and how it came from the...
